Not sure? Don’t open the door. West Mercia Police have recently received reports of rogue traders in the Ross‑on‑Wye area, so it’s a good time to stay alert and look out for one another. Rogue traders often turn up without warning, offering home improvements or gardening work. They can be very persuasive and may try to pressure you into making quick decisions. They sometimes target people who are kind, trusting, or living alone. They might: Say they’ve noticed a problem with your home or garden.Claim they have leftover materials from another job, such as paving or tarmac.Try to rush you into buying something or agreeing to work on the spot.Offer a cheap price at first, then demand a much higher amount once the work is done.Suggest driving you to the bank so you can withdraw money.Give false names, phone numbers, or addresses. How to keep yourself safe: A few simple habits can make a big difference: If you’re unsure who’s at the door, it’s absolutely fine not to open it.Always check who the caller is. Use a phone number from a bill or directory, or look up the company on a trusted review site.If you need work done, get several quotes from reputable businesses and take your time deciding.Keep an eye out for neighbours, friends, and family—especially those who might be more vulnerable.Ask someone you trust to be with you if a caller is due to return.Keep doors and windows locked, and use a door chain when answering the door.Report rogue traders to Trading Standards, and contact the police if you feel unsafe or threatened.Keep any paperwork or notes about what was discussed with traders.
